When they got there, the settlers were faced with a salty estuary filled with disease carrying mosquitoes. Many came for gold, but of course there wasn't any, and since most of the men were used to a more leisurely life, they weren't exactly great workers. Another reason was because the company that funded the colony had no interest in their welfare, just a profit. During the first winter, most of them died. Things only changed when John Rolph found a way to successfully cultivate tobacco. At best, the only accomplishment was that some survived.

The House of Burgesses was the first representative assembly in the English colonies, and it provided an essential forum for debate and decision-making in the Jamestown colony. However, whether it was the best type of government for the colony is a subjective question. The House of Burgesses allowed for some level of self-governance, but power was still heavily concentrated in the hands of the colonial elite. Additionally, it excluded many groups, such as women and indentured servants, from participation in the political process.

Jamestown was built in a swamp. Although it kept natives at bay, the soil was bad and disease and disease carriers were in no short supply. The original settlers were of an upper class and had never had to work before, making them lazy. The colony managed to have some success when John Rolfe introduced tobacco, a get-rich-quick variety of crop.

What is important to remember about the Jamestown colony?

The lesson of Jamestown is to go prepared . The men of Jamestown went for the wrong reason, built a fort in the wrong location, and didn't plan very well. This cost them their lives because within 6 months 34 of the 104 were still alive. At some point there will be a colony on the moon and I would hope that the people going would learn the lessons from 200 years ago in Jamestown.
