Raphael was an artist and architect during the period known as the High Renaissance. During this time, he was most well known for his frescoes. In the Palace of the Vatican, there are four Stanze di Raffaello (Raphael's rooms) that are full of these frescoes; the most famous is The School of Athens.

Raphael was also known for his paintings of the Madonna. Perhaps most famous of these oil paintings is the Sistine Madonna. He also painted a number of portraits, such as his Portrait of Pope Julius II. Later in his life, he collaborated with other artists in printmaking.

He died rather young (age 37), but his body of work was very large and very beautiful.
