Although Jefferson valued intelligence in women, his thoughts on their role in society wasn't any different than any other eighteenth century man. He wanted them to assume traditional feminine roles, suppress their sexuality, and always leave behind an aura of genteel purity. While Jefferson viewed natives as 'Noble Savages,' and admired them on a certain level, he believed them to be a nuisance to progress, and was responsible for the beginning of the Trail of Tears.

He believed that all men were created equal, as stated in the Declaration of Independence. He owned slaves, but thought the concept immortal, writing the original draft of the Declaration to denounce it, writing appeals of legislation to the forming government to end it, both to no avail as those in power were slightly louder than him and wanted it.

His autobiography states he did not think a country of freedmen under the same government as whites could be stable, and in legislative appeals proposed a slow deportation to their countries of origin as a remedy and repayment for ruining their livelihoods.
