∙ 9y agoAfter the Civil War, the goals of the North's effort to "reconstruct" the South were primarily two in number. The first was to provide assistance to the finally-freed African-Americans who continued to reside in the South. The second was to contribute to the general rebuilding of Southern infrastructure, agriculture, and industry. On both of these counts (and others), the North was concerned to ensure that the South moved forward after the war rather than retreating into pre-war social structures and policies.
