However electrical batteries were also used during the Civil War to power telegraph communication and for electric detenation of sea mines. (known as torpedos in the 1860's)

There is nothing bad about mules. The only disadvantage is that they are sterile. In all other respects they are vastly superior to horses or donkeys (this includes strength, durability, food intake and intelligence). No army that used mules has ever lost a war.
