For one thing it confirmed the growing feeling that unsupported paratropers could not defeat regular troops, particulary armored. They simply could not bring along artillery, tanks and other heavy items that modern armies require. The Germans had concluded this after their successful, but costly invasion of Crete. I think it also had the effect of putting Monty, the tempermental English General, in his place. After this operation he was a little more open to suggestion.

It meant that it would be possible to liberate France, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands. Basically, it was the end of German rule in those countries and a race to Berlin that the Americans lost.

Overall, the significance was the foothold that the Allies gained in occupied Europe, especially after Operation Husky failed.

Overlord (the invasion of Normandy, "D-Day") was the beginning of the final German defeat in World War II. With the Russians continually advancing to the East, and then the Americans, British and Canadians firmly onshore in the West, Germany was cornered, and it's eventual defeat insured.
