Major battles like the one at Chattanooga Tennessee, always bring forth opinions form historians on major or minor effects that were created by the conflict. The Battle of Chattanooga is no different. A good number of historians believe that after Chattanooga, a new era had begun in the Western Theater. The effects are perhaps overdone by the use of the term "era". Nevertheless, this marked the point at which Union forces had grown to such a size that they were able to counter Confederate raids. These raids, large and small ones were constantly aimed at supply and communication lines. In addition, after Chattanooga, Union forces conducted raids of their own behind enemy lines.Confederate problems after Chattanooga resulted in a change of command. Braxton Bragg was replaced by General Joseph E. Johnston, in an effort to hamper the Union's war efforts in the West.
