The Articles of Confederation didn't enforce certain laws. The Articles couldn't regulate trade, force citizens to join the army, or impose taxes. If Congress needed money, they had to ask state legislatures who could deny.

articles of confederation?

a written agreement ratified in 1781 by 13 original states; it provided a legal symbol of their union by giving the central government no coercive power over the states or their citizens. It was a document signed amongst thirteen original colonies that established United States of America as a confederation of the sovereign states and served as its first constitution.

Why did your founding fathers meet to write a new constitution for the us?

The constitution in use at the time, the Articles of Confederation, gave too much power to the state governments, and not enough to the central government. Because the states had most of the power and they all had their own best interests at heart, they spent a lot of the time that Congress was in session arguing amongst themselves and not getting anything done. There were other factors as well that caused instability in the US and they led to "Shay's Rebellion" which caused many to question whether the state governments were handling their jobs properly. *technically, it wasn't the founding fathers that met to write the new constitution*

Why did some Americans feel that the articles of confederation were not sufficient for the new nation?

Because of the weakness of the Central Government. It meant that both enemy and fellow citizen could attack America at will. It was meant to be a Constitutional Republic. But we're so far from that, it's sad. And do most Americans know what a Republic is? No, they're still drugged into it's thinking it's a Democracy! The last thing the Fathers wanted was a ruling Majority unopposed and a Democracy is the cousin of Oligarchy, Fascism and the likes.

Did Newfoundland want to have the confederation?

Newfoundland had two separate referendums on joining Canada. In 1948, there were 3 options on the referendum: 1. Responsible Government - 44.6% 2. Confederation with Canada - 41.1% 3. Commission of Government - 14.3% Since there was no clear majority and the third option was an outlier it was removed from the ballot and a re-vote was commenced on July 22, 1948: 1. Confederation with Canada - 52.3% 2. Responsible Government - 47.7% This has been a debate amongst many Newfoundlanders that a majority of citizens did not actually want a confederation with Canada due to losing the first referendum, and that the majority vote was won by rural swing votes.
