During the American Civil War, several battles turned out to be most 'key' (or, decisive) in terms of the overall outcome. The most important of these occurred in 1863: first, at Vicksburg (Mississippi), where Union troops eventually took control of this bastion of the river and thereby cut the South into two parts; second, at Gettysburg (Pennsylvania), where the second invasion-attempt by the South was stymied, with the Southern army retreating back to Virginia, never again to attempt an invasion of the North.

Some of the most significant battles fought during the American Civil War include the Battle of Fort Sumter, the Battle of Yorktown, the Battle of Shiloh, and the Battle of Gettysburg. The result of the war was a Union victory over the Confederacy.

In the Civil War, perhaps the two most important battles that took place concluded at roughly the same time. In the West, the Battle of Vicksburg ended in favor of the Union on July 4th; in the East, the Battle of Gettysburg ended on July 3rd and also with a Union victory. Both battles led to drastically changed circumstances in the overall war, with the Union moving forward in the West and gaining the upper hand in the East in such a way as to ensure the eventual defeat of the Confederacy.

There were hundres of battles and many more skirmishes. If you open any high school text book to the chapter on the American Civil War, you will only find 2 or 3 battles mentioned. Those books fall far short of telling the story of the struggles during these 4 years. The National Park Service website has a list of Battles by State. Select a battle and it gives a summary of each one. http://www.nps.gov/history/hps/abpp/battles/bystate.htm
