The main reason they did that was one of the ways they showed loyalty to the their gods, and Zeus, being the King of the Gods, but I am pretty sure that they wanted something to symbolize higher power then just a simple statue or temples. So the Olympic games took place as a sort of a mass symbolizing importance. As a matter of fact, their was an Ivory and Gold statue of Zeus in Olympia. Hope that helps.

Zeus is the "Father of Gods and men" who rules the Olympians of Mount Olympus as a father rules the family according to the ancient Greek religion. He is the god of sky and thunder in Greek mythology. Zeus is etymologically cognate with and, under Hellenic influence, became particularly closely identified with Roman Jupiter.

According to the earliest records, the first Olympic games were held in 776 BC. The Olympic games originate in athletic contests to honor of Zeus and other deities at Olympia. The games were also helped to solve the constant civil wars among the Greek city-states. During the Olympic games Elis and Olympia were sacred sites and that no armed man should set foot on the grounds. In addition, three months before and after the games, a truce should exist among all the Greek city-states. This sacred truce of the games became an almost religious observance among the Greeks.
