And another answerThe was a significant amount of greed on the part of Europeans who came to Africa. Their whole attitude was conquer, conquer, conquer! And through conquering those peoples of Africa and setting up Imperial strongholds, they could become wealthy. The idea that they were there to convert those savages to Christianity is itself backwards. Particularly, because those who preached did not practice what they preached. This is why Africa is in shambles today. AnswerThe desire to spread Christian values as a means of saving a "backwards" society. Another Other AnswerAfrica is shambled today because people were taking what wasnt there's in the first place.. but don't forget that America was also a crime in with making Africa crumble. if i remember correctly it was the white people who enslaved africans to make them slaves.. that's why Africa is messed up and that's why it will still be messed up for a long long time

The first reason was labor...in a pre industrialized society, slaves performed many menial tasks allowing for their masters to have more leisure time. Contrary to what the PC spin doctors say, slavery was caused more by blacks enslaving fellow blacks than the white man enslaving blacks because why should the whites risk the dangerous hinterlands when they could hire black slavers to collect the needed number of slaves.

The second major reason came to be when the Industrial Age emerged. Under such a scenario, slave labor is no longer a viable enterprise (No, the UK didn't free its slaves out of the goodness of their hearts.), but raw materials are now the important commodity. Africa was a massive source of raw materials, so those with the most colonies gained a primary advantage over those with less. (This situation was one of the later flashpoints that eventually became WW I)

The third reason is a bit less exact in its explanation, but this came to be in the Post WW II era. The colonial empires were falling apart as a resurgent nationalism resulted in independence of many of the former colonies. The new focus became economic in scope; the raw materials from Africa were still needed, but now it was suitable to deal with the former colonies for what they had versus simply stealing it.
