The main causes of the Libeiran civil conflict.

Several factors can be attributable to the liberian civil war which can either be classified as remote and immediate. The remote causes include ethnic rivalry, weakened democratic institutions, economic marginalization, among others.

Ethnic Rivalry:

Liberia was established as a home for freed black slaves from the United States. The freed slaves excluded the indeginous populace from participating in the governance of the country. The sixteen ethnic groups of Liberia were disenfranchised, denied access to education and economically remained destitute in a country they belonged. Indeginous were granted citizenship in the early 1900s. During the period of 1847 to 1980 when the Indeginous liberian under the leadership of Master sergeant Samuel Doe seized power in a military coup, the Americo-Liberia had ruled Liberia throughout. Upon assumption of power, Doe foster ehnic rivalry between the indeginous Liberian and Americo-Liberia on one hand and his Krahn ethnic group against other indeginous ethnic groups on the other hand. Doe's ethnic group began to enjoy privileges like the Americo-Libeirans used to do. This resulted in heightened tension between and amongst the tribes.

Weakened Democratic Institutions:

The Liberian state was established as a democracy in 1847 but during its period of existence weakened institutions continued to plague the political waters. The True Whig Party led the government from 1871 to 1980. During this period, political opponents were harassed intimidated, exiled and imprisoned. The party retain dominance in both houses of the legislature, the cabinet and judiciary. The Liberia national Police and the Armed Forces of Liberia owed their loyalties to the government and could not protect the rights of the people. Liberia was a police state. The security forces became law unto themselves. Freedom of the press and speech was frequently challenged with arrests of journalists and citizens. Liberia is known by the Guiness Book of world records as having the most rigged elections in the world where the number of registered voters exceeded the amount of votes cast in the 1957 elections. Liberia is replete with rigged elections, election malpractices and I would say in short, LIberia is a land where free and fair elections before the war was absent. The court system was another institution of democracy that was greatly affected by the political system Judges became loyal to the government and party and could not rendered judgments based on the merits of the law. The court could not distinguish political incidents from criminal cases. Liberian lost confidence in the court system. Party officials and ruling elite were above the law and untouchable.

Economic Marginalization:

The practice of systemized political exclusion led to a fragmentalization of the society. Americo-liberians became the elites of the country. Eventhough they made up less than two percent of the population they controlled about 95% of the country's wealth. Many indeginous liberian could not affortd education to increase their share in the national cake. Many were living far below the poverty line prior to the civil war. Many LIberian become despondent of their economic lot.

Remote Cause:

The remote cause of the liberian civil war was the invasion of Liberia by Charles Taylor from Ivory Coast on 24th December 1990. Taylor's advancing forces comprising mostly Gios and Manos who suffered the brunt of Does deaths and beatings squeezed the dominant Krahn Armed Forces of Liberia in to small corner of the City of Monrovia barely eight months after the war began
