Did colonial children do chores

Kids grew up much quicker and earlier in Colonial Days, because daily life was about survival, not just existence. There was so much work to be done on a farm, because there was little technology to take the work away from people.

So early on, young kids would gather eggs, feed chickens, take care of cattle and hogs. They'd also help out mother by helping to make soap, make candle wax, make yarn for clothing, and caring for the garden. They would also go out Into the Woods, search for berries, or fruit growing wild to eat.

There was plenty enough of work to be done, just to have enough food to survive thru the winter, and start growing crops again for the next year.

As they got older, perhaps middle school age, especially the boys would go out with their dads to go hunting for meat. They would learn how to trap smaller game like foxes and weasels. All of this was so that the family could survive.

You find that families during that time were usually very large, sometimes up to dozen kids. But many of the times, babies died extremely early, many didn't make it past their first year, because it was so hard to live back then, especially when medicine was almost nonexistent. If you got sick, you relied upon the plants and herbs that grew around you.

Nowadays, with so much factories and supermarkets to get us our food, it's much harder for kids to learn the truth about real life, rather than enjoy all the fun of iPods, MTV, and rap music. Kids growing up on farms usually have a greater understanding of life, because they still help keep the farm going, so they see how cows are born, see they have to be milked twice a day, they kill the chickens for dinner, and they still plant the fields to grow the crops. They see that they are much more dependent upon the weather for their life than do people living and working in cities.

But they did also get some time to play they weren't just doing chores all the time eathier that maybe how it sounds though

Some of the chores included: chopping and gathering of fire wood; tending and feeding the stock (animals); milking the cow; helping with the plowing, planting, and harvesting of the crops.

Girls took care of there baby brothers or sisters because they have at least 7 or 8 children in there family.
