In 1898, the USS Maine was blown up as it was anchored in the harbor of Havana, Cuba. The US press, politicians and others blamed the horrible event and the deaths of many US sailors on Spain. The result was the Spanish American War.

We were itching for a reason to boot the Spanish from Cuba, and the sinking of the US battleship The Maine in Havana Harbor provided that reason. Historical hindsight, however, has pretty much proved the sinking was the result of an accidental explosion where all the ammo was stored. But the War did vault Theodore Roosevelt into the national Spotlight
