Rizal is considered as our national hero because he fights for our country without using any violence but only through his writings, using only his pen and brain that our country was able to surpass the colonialism of Spain.. Unlike Andres Bonifacio and other heroes that used deadly weapons to achieve our victory. Rizal is chosen to be our national hero because of his abilities and knowledge. furthermore, he is the only hero that is known all over the world because of his uncountable monuments.
The Filipinos chose Rizal as their national hero. In fact, the revolutionary President of the First Philippine Republic, Emilio Aguinaldo first designated Rizal as a national hero. Rizal advocated independence by seeking reforms from the Spaniards through peaceful means. His literary works like Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Subversive) awakened the Filipinos that reforms should be made to stop the abuses of the Spaniards towards them. Rizal is the Filipinos' martyr for independence and freedom and he richly deserved to be a hero.
The Americans wanted somebody who was not a revolutionary and who would not cause them any trouble.
There are many things that are included in the criteria for being a national hero. Dying for the country is one of best ways for becoming a national hero.
Dr. Jose Rizal became the Philippine National Hero because he passed the criteria set during the American period. Rizal also symbolizes goodness, intelligence and talents in a peaceful and not in an aggressive way.

He is an American Sponsored Hero
Jose P. Rizal was sponsored by the Americans during the 1901 Philippine Commission. As the new colonizers of the Philippine islands, the Americans wanted to have a Filipino who can be considered as a hero, and a national hero at that. He was among the five choices of heroes ranging from Marcelo H. Del Pilar to Antonio Luna. The initial winner by a unanimous vote was Marcelo H. Del Pilar. But with the addition of the fifth criteria for electing the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal was finally chosen due to his dramatic death by firing squad. It was then further affirmed in Philippine society to this day. Now, knowing the roots of Rizal's selection, would you still have him as your national hero?
