The climate of the North favored smaller farms, whereas the South thrived with large plantations that grew cash crops. An abundance of Natural Resources in the North favored industrialization, while the south remained mainly agrarian. Seven out of every eight immigrants chose to settle in the North because of the abundance of industrial jobs. In addition, the North had a more complete railroad infrastructure set in place, making transportation much easier.

In the North:

- there was no slavery

- the location of the industries (access to the capital and flowing rivers)

- the labor unions emerge

- middle class (helpers of businesses, owned by upper class) emerges

- life of a middle class family: the man went off to earn money to support the household, while the woman tended to the house and children.

- life of a farm family: men, women, and children work all day.

- 1840: immigrants from protestant England, Scotland, Ireland, and Germany (due to economic upheavals and famines) doubles the middle class of America. They were attracted to cities (factory jobs).

In the South:

- farming (cultivation of cotton) resulted in the use of more slaves

- access to agriculturally favorable land and climate

- the cotton production boosts (Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin)

- increase in supply of cotton --> demand for Northern textile factories

- a large amount of workers was needed to meet the demands of a large amount of cotton. therefore, planters acquired income from the illegal trade of slaves.

- education meant little to Southerners

- the whites feel racial superiority in the South

- immigrants do not emigrate south because of the lack of factory jobs

More information: The Tariff of 1816 protected American industry from dying when British trade came back to America. However, farmers (who wanted to have nothing to do with it because industry was hurting their lifestyle to begin with) had to pay higher prices for consumer goods. Crafting skill was lost from Americans when industry entered.

The artisan workers got together to better the wages and conditions. They wanted reduced hours. They finally went on strike against their employers.

Since there were so many immigrants, American businesses were noticing that jobs that should have been offered to citizens were being given to immigrants. Businesses began hiring American citizens instead, which caused major poverty for new immigrants in the 1950's. Some were not hired also b/c of their religious belief.

In 1850, the North had twice as many free people as the South. This trend increased political power in the North.

It was argued that agricultural slave life was more positive job for a person than the industrial factory jobs of white Northerners.
