The attack on Pearl Harbor, unified the populace of the United States more than any event in the past 200 years of our history. The average American was outraged at the acts of the Japanese, and that outrage soon turned to determination to defeat this enemy at all cost. Americans soon flooded the recruitment centers around the country to volunteer for service. The president (FDR) called on congress for a declaration of war and soon got it. The declaration passed on a vote of 388 to 1, the lone dissenter being Montana congresswoman Jeanette Rankin. Ms. Rankin was a lifelong pacifist and had previously voted against the US entry into world war one. After her no vote on the war, she did not run again for reelection. Later in life she would also oppose US involvement in Viet Nam. During the run up to the US getting fully into the war, many black Americans clamored for a chance to fight, asking only for a chance to prove themselves as Americans. Due to the segregated military at the time, they would get few chances to prove that they were worthy warriors. ( Notable exceptions; the Tuskegee Airman and the Red Ball Express). I am continuing to search for other pacifist movements in the US at the time.
People against fighting a war, remained quiet after Pearl Harbor.
People against any forms of violence, generally kept a low profile after Pearl Harbor.
What were the different turning points of Pearl Harbor?
