The expression "Stolen Generation" is an emotive phrase used to peddle a cause for certain interest groups. The children labelled as the stolen generation, were removed from drunk, violent or abusive parents and put into foster homes. When the same thing happens to non-Aboriginal children, it is called a"Duty of Care".

The stolen generation, a very dark period in Australia's history, resulted in a loss of the Aboriginal culture. During the 20th century, tens of thousands of Aboriginal children were taken forcibly from their families. These were the 'Stolen Generations'. They were taken because it was Federal and State Government policy that Aboriginal children, including those of mixed Aboriginal and European parentage, should be removed from their parents and 'educated" properly. Children were taken from their families, and brought up in white folks' homes, with the aim of removing all traces of the aboriginal culture.

Without constant exposure to the tribal elders with their wealth of knowledge and history, and the opportunity to hear the stories and songs, or participate in rites and ceremonies, the children lost their memories of their traditional way of life. These children grew up being caught in between two cultures and were expected to live the whites' way of life, yet never really fitted in. They suffered a real loss of identity as a result. Aborigines believe they are inherently linked to the land, and to be uprooted from their homeland caused anguish that white man cannot comprehend.
