"Iroquois" is not the name of one tribe but a group of allied tribes - the Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, Mohawk and Tuscarora.
Each tribe had its own council of elders and chiefs - the elders were older men who had experienced warfare, who had been successful hunters and who had gained respect and authority in their own tribe.
These older men were given specific titles within each tribe; among the Cayuga some of these titles were:
Deyohǫwetǫ (Mossy Place)
Deyotowehgǫh (Double Cold)
Deyǫhyęgo (It Touches the Sky)
Gadagwasęh (It is Bruised)
Gajinǫdaweheh (Coming On Its Knees)
Hadǫdaheha (Putting It On Top)

The original Iroquois League (also known as the Five Nations) consisted of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes.
In Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) culture, elders hold positions of respect and guidance within the community. They are seen as repositories of traditional knowledge, wisdom, and cultural practices, and play a key role in decision-making processes and conflict resolution. Elders also pass down oral histories and teachings to younger generations to ensure the preservation of their heritage.
Historically, the Iroquois had tribal elders to teach young men about stories of their culture. Young men would have mentors that showed them how to make weapons or hunt. Women were mostly taught by their mothers.
Not geographically, the Hopi are located in the American Southwest, New Mexico area, and the Iroquois are in the Northeast. However, there does seem to be a relationship between them. One belief is that the Iroquois originated in the southwest and migrated east and northward. There are some similarities between Iroquois cultures and the Hopi and I've heard elders refer to the Hopi as their relatives. Also it is not the 'Iroquois tribe.' Iroquois is mostly a language group divided between Northern Iroquois and Southern Iroqouis: Northern Iroquois consisting of the well known Haudenosaunee (Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, Tuscarora) among many other nations in Pennsylvania and Canada along Lake Ontario and the Southern Iroqouis consisting of the Cherokee and other nations.
The role of the elders in the Iroquois confederacy was to make smaller decision's then the Great Council. Also the elder has the power to over throw a chief if he or she doesn't believe they are doing a good job.
The possessive form of the plural noun elders is elders'.Example: You should consider your elders' advice.
The Iroquois Confederacy was a sophisticated political and social system. It united the territories of the five nations in a symbolic longhouse that stretched across the present-day state of New York. The original five nations of the Confederacy were divided into two groups: the Elders, consisting of the Mohawk, the Onondaga, and the Seneca; and the Younger, the Oneida and the Cayuga. Despite this distinction, all decisions of the Confederacy had to be unanimous.
