justinian I wanted to recover the lands lost by the western part of the Roman Empire. He retook Tunisia and eastern Algeria from the Vandals. He won the gothic Wars against the ostrogoths in Italy and took part of southern Spain from the Visigoths. However, these gains were eventually lost.

Justinian the Great pursued a war with the Persians which begin before his reign. After some fighting h. e concluded a peace treaty. Eight years later the Persians resumed hostility, sacked Romans towns in the east and occupied a Roman territory. Justinian concluded another peace treaty and paid a tribute in exchange for the Persians withdrawing form the territory they occupied.

Justinian set out to reconquer territories which the western part of the Roman Empire had lost to invaders. He fought the Vandals who had taken territory in northern Tunisia and eastern Algeria. He defeated them and brought the Vandalic kingdom to an end. The area was reincorporated to the empire and the Vandals were wiped out. He also set out to retake Italy from the Ostrogoths. The war here dragged on for 19 years. The Byzantines won, but they were left exhausted and could not respond to an invasion by the Lombards 14 years later and lost most of their territory in Italy. Justinian also retook territory in southern Spain from the Visigoths. The Visigoths reconquered this area 64 years later,
