Compare and contrast the culture and economy of the southern colonies with that of the new England colonies?
southern colonies releied on agriculture and the new england colonies were run by manufacturing like trade, lumber, and fishing were their primary source of income. The sothern colonies made thier income with cash crop like tobacco, rice, and indigo. there was more agriculture in the south and was mostly run by slaves and the northern colonies has smaller family run farms.
The early southern colonies were almost entirely agriculture instead of trade like the northern colonies. They were ruled by a Governor sent from England who followed rules from the planter class (the people who owned the land). Their political structure was a strong central government, much like they were used to from their lives in England.
Often immigrants sought new lives in foreign colonies such as the American ones because they were attempting to escape poverty or religious persecution. In England, Puritans and Pilgrims wanted religious freedom and the American colonies provided more freedom then England did. The American colonies also seemed like good places for new farming ventures. This brought people from various parts of Europe to the American colonies.
The middle colonies produced different goods than the southern colonies. For example the Southern colonies produced cotton and tobacco, while the middle colonies produced other goods. In terms of slavery, the New England countries gave up slavery first. Middle colonies like New Jersey were one of the last states to abolish slavery.
