France is in a very precarious position in the 1790s: The removal of the monarchy has created a very big question: What replaces it ? Or more to the point who ? After the 2nd Italian campaign Napoleon establishes himself as Emperor and new fields of action happen in 1805. Ulm & the march on Vienna are examples of Military Imperialism at its finest, assuming you see the French as I do, I suppose. Similarly the crushing of the Prussians in 1806. And Napoleon makes his enemies grovel ! He seeks to establish France as master of Europe, much to the concern of the British. The Tzar therefore is next to be viewed aggressively, culminating at Tilsit. And there really the ascent ends.... Napoleon I think sees European conquest as his destiny, to the great glory of France. And of course Napoleon sees himself as the Nation personified.... he is France.

Napoleon Bonapart's goal was to be the emperor of all Europe and increase the amount of provinces France had in countries far afield. Napoleon achieved some of his achievements by deceit. For example, he invaded Spain in the guise of invading Portugal, instead he invaded Spain and Portugal. Napoleons biggest mistake was invading Russia where the infamous Russian weather defeated him rather than Russian military might.

During his rise to power in France and then in Europe, Napoleon's main goal seemed to change with each new stage of his career. Generally speaking, however, his main goal initially was to serve his country as an efficient military officer; then, his main goal was to provide a much-needed stability in a country torn by revolutionary zeal; then, his main goal was to rise to supreme command in France itself. With that goal accomplished, it is quite clear that he became dominated with visions of creating a new empire in Europe with himself as its glorious ruler.
