The US was not defeated in Viet Nam. Rather, the war, unpopular and unwinnable due to constraints placed on the US Military by politicians back home, became the main campaign issue of the 1972 presidential elections. Richard Nixon, running on a platform that, among other things, promised to end the war with honor, was elected and fulfilled his campaign promise by signing the Paris Peace Accords in 1973 and subsequently ordering the withdrawal of all US forces.
