Initially, the Germans used a very mobile attack against the French and Russians.

This developed into trench warfare, especially in France. The tactics used included lengthy bombardments, followed by massive assaults. The assaults were answered by machine guns.

Eventually, poison gas was introduced. This was initially very successful, but was answered by the introduction of gas masks.

The Germans introduced a new type of assault in its last offensive, called the Spring Offensive, in which there was no heavy initial bombardment, but instead small units attacked weak points in the line.

The introduction of tanks produced a new tactical situation in which what amounted to protected artillery was able to advance into enemy positions, bringing infantry behind it. This was effectively used by the Allies.

During WW1 trench warfare was generally used. They were generally dug in a W like pattern with machine guns at the tips. Lots of mortars and gas were used as well. The land between enemy and ally entrenchments was known as "No Mans Land" Most troops that entered NO mans Land were never to return. Machine guns were introduced during with war and the slandered weapon was a bolt action rifle. 80% of all deaths were by the hands of a machine gun. So basically Trench warfare was used.
