∙ 10y agoSome of the names applied to the Southern soldier: Seesesh, Secessionist, Reb, Rebel, Johnny, and Johnny Reb. These names were also used to denote the Confederate Armies, the Confederacy or any state that was a part of the Confederacy.
The name for the states in rebellion was The Confederate States of America.

∙ 7y agoOfficially the North was the United States or the United States of America. That these states had combined to form a "union" when the US Constitution was ratified, stuck for awhile. Then after the war, that term faded away.
