The religion in the southern colonies was mainly an Anglican faith. The Catholics lived in Maryland for religious freedom and separation of the Church of England. The southern colonies wanted freedom for all religion.

The South was predominantly Christian, and specifically Baptistic in its religion. Though Presbyterianism, Anglicanism(Episcopalian), Methodist, etc all thrived as well, the largest body was by far various people stemming from the baptistic theological traditions. They emphasized things like solo scriptura, believers only baptisms, independent churches loosely federated or completely separatist. The divergence of beliefs among baptists can thus be great as their is no central place to go to in order to get all their beliefs.
