The Romans a multitude of deities. Each of them was the deity of something specific, such as fertility, propitiation hunting the harvest, the family, women, wisdom, medicine, art, travellers, etc. There was a god or a goddess for nearly everything. The deities did not have any responsibilities. it was the Romans who had responsibilities towards the gods and goddesses. They had to perform sacrifices and other rituals in their honour.
The 'Roman Names' were worshiped and known to the Romans before the Greek; when the Greek people were conquered, their gods and goddesses were incorporated into the Roman gods and goddesses; so it is that it is near impossible to now tell the difference between the two. That, by the way, was a common practice of the Romans, adopting the gods and goddesses of the people they conquered/ruled.
Greek gods were kinder, and less about war. Roman gods were about honor, strength and discipline. Also, the Greek gods were the original ones. Later, the Romans came and borrowed the Greek gods(cultural borrowing) but put different names. For example: Hera (Greek)is Juno(Roman), Zeus is Jupiter, Hades is Pluto, etc. ZL
