We are not really sure what gospel Paul taught. He said in his epistles that he received it from no man, and later he went to Jerusalem to apprise the leaders of that church of the gospel he taught. So, it would seem that his gospel was very different from that taught by James and Peter. This is confirmed by the number of "false apostles" and "super apostles" who frequently challenged his teachings. The fragment that has been called the kerygma contains the formula that Jesus died for our sins according to the scriptures, was buried and was raised on the third day according to scriptures and that he appeared to many. Some scholars say that Paul seems to have seen Jesus as a heavenly being or spiritual force, rather than a human who lived on earth in the recent past.

We know that Paul taught the admittance of Gentiles into the Church, and that they should be free of the Law, including circumcision and dietary restrictions. He taught that women should cover their heads and be humble and obedient. He also taught a strict sexual code. A careful study of his epistles suggests that some of his teachings changed over time.

What are the differences between the teachings of Paul and the teachings of the Church in Jerusalem headed by Jesus' brother James?

We do know that Paul taught that salvation came from faith alone, not from the Jewish law. Paul was clearly much more open to accepting non-Jews into the Church, and insisted that they need not be circumcised or follow Jewish dietary laws.We know little about the teachings of James, although of course modern Christianity assumes that he followed what is now orthodox Christian teachings. It seems that the Jerusalem Church, headed by James, taught that observance of the Old Testament laws was required for salvation. We need to be careful in reading James' Epistle, since this was probably not written by James himself, however it does appear to reflect his views about salvation by works and the Law.
