Korea (Port Arthur, although not part of Korea, was close enough to it). Russia wanted ice-free seaports and Japan didn't want Russia so close to it's borders; to quote some Japanese Generals: They didn't want "...that dagger (korea) pointed at their chests!"

Russia & Japan were fighting over control of portions of the Chinese mainland; Manchuria and Korea (Russia wanted an ice free seaport/Japan didn't want an enemy so close to Japan). 1904-1905

While Britain and the Dutch (settlers in South Africa), who called themselves Boers (farmers), fought for control of South Africa...which the British had discovered was rich in raw materials (like diamonds, etc.). 1899-1902

The first "civil war" was in England and was fought for control of the country. The U.S. Civil War was fought between the majority of the nation and a breakaway region. Today, "civil war" means a war fought mainly within one country, whether the reason for fighting is to take over the whole country or to break away a part as a new country.
