∙ 10y agoThe period in which the second generation computers were developed is usually considered to span the period from 1958 to 1964, although prototype transistorised computers had been developed some years earlier and certain transistorized computers were developed as late as 1969. Deliveries of existing second generation models to some customers continued into the early 1970s before the machines were declared obsolete and manufacturer support discontinued.
Prior to 1958 the available bipolar junction transistors were too slow to operate at "computer speeds" and had severe reliability problems, only the far more expensive point contact transistors were fast enough for computer use and they also had reliability problems.
After 1964 the integrated circuit took over, initially hybrid integrated circuits then monolithic integrated circuits.
