I don't know what the most popular music was in the 90s but grunge (nirvana and Pearl Jam etc) was very popular so was Brit pop (oasis and blur). Also boy bands were extremely popular with take that being one of the biggest.
Just to add, I do know that nirvana was from the type of music called "punk rock"

∙ 12y agoI was born in 1990, and I remember there were two strong categories of music: pop and grunge. Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Spice Girls, these were all 'Pop' groups. Nirvana and Soundgarden were very popular grunge groups. As well, punk music was quite popular. Nofx and Sex Pistols are good examples, but they formed in the eighties or earlier, so one can't really contribute them to the musical decade that is the nineties.
