The frontal lobe contains the personality and perception of time and space. Damaging the frontal lobe would probably change a persons personality. A pre-frontal lobotomy has been preformed on patients that had excessive behaviors. The procedure, now abandoned, made the patients meek, useless and sometimes just staring into space.

Given the wide range of functions which the frontal lobe carries out (some of which include working memory, decision making and problem solving) it would be very difficult to say what would happen in the case of general frontal lobe damage. Often times, in studies that investigate patients with frontal lobe damage, the individuals have very specific damage or lesions, which, depending on the frontal region that was damaged, can result in various types of impairment. Frontal lobe injuries have resulted in impairments in executive functions, as well as personality changes (Phineas Gage is a commonly cited example) and deficits in social cognitive abilities, which involves interacting with others.

What functions specifically are affected by the "left" frontal lobe ??

Well if the frontal lobe is damaged the person will act like a child more or less. The frontal lobe does not activate until the 20s-30s range depending on gender. So the person will act like a child.

There is impairment of social and moral behavior. Phineas Gage is an example. A pole went through his prefrontal cortex and his behavior changed. He was rude and did things he would not have done prior to the damage.

Can you function without a frontal lobe?

It depends on what you mean by function. Can you live without a frontal lobe? Yes. You can carry out basic functions without a frontal lobe, including eating, sleeping, moving, etc. As the frontal lobes control executive functions (planning, strategies, social awareness, etc.), without a frontal lobe you would not have these abilities and your personality would be different. Many mammals have small frontal lobes and as a result usually do not engage in the higher level cognitive functions listed above.
