Since the visible planets as a class are the brightest things in the sky (after the Sun and Moon), the first object to appear in the evening twilight sky ... referred to historically as the "Evening Star" ... is typically a planet. It can be Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn.

However, Venus is usually referred to as the Morning and Evening star.

Both Mercury and Venus have been known as the "morning star" or "evening star" in some form for various cultures and civilizations. Sometimes, these evening and morning appearances were thought to represent different "stars." (Of course, they are not stars at all and are rather the two planets closest to the Sun.)

In ancient Greece, Mercury was called Apollo when it appeared as a morning star with sunrise and Hermes (the Greek equivalent of the Roman god Mercury) when it appeared as an evening star near sunset.

Venus was also known to ancient civilizations both as the "morning star" and as the "evening star". The Greeks thought of the two as separate stars, Phosphorus and Hesperus, until the sixth century BC.

The Romans designated the morning aspect of Venus as Lucifer (meaning Light-Bringer) and the evening aspect as Vesper.

Venus is dramatic in the morning and evening sky while Mercury is smaller, dimmer and hard to see. (Most people have never seen Mercury and everyone has seen Venus - whether they know it or not.) As a consequence, references to Venus are more common when the terms morning star or evening star are made.

The planet Venus is alternately the "morning star" when it is visible in the pre-dawn hours, and the "evening star" when it is visible shortly after sunset.

This is due to the differences in the relative locations of the Earth and Venus during our orbits around the Sun. Since Venus is closer to the Sun than the Earth is, it orbits the Sun more quickly. Venus is the "evening star" when it is catching up to the Earth, and is the "morning star" after it has raced ahead.

The Morning and Evening Star are a references to the planet Venus. Because it reflects the light from the sun so well it is usually the first "Star" that you see in evening and the last you see in the morning.

Although it is not a "Star", in ancient times they knew no different and so believed it to be one, and because it is so close to us its light (although only reflected from the sun) made it the brightest other visible object in the morning and evening sky, hence its name.

Confusingly, Mercury is also referred to in this way, for similar reasons.

The Star of David is a geometrical figure made by two triangles superimposed. It is also called the Jewish Star. It has six points, unlike the more familiar insignia star of five points, such as those used in military insignia and Texas police badges. (This type may have been adopted because the word TEXAS has five letters! The Star of David is a heraldic emblem, of Jews and Israel, and of course figures on the Israeli flag. It is not based on any known celestial body!

Normally the only star you can see during the daylight hours is the Sun. The light from the sun scatters in our atmosphere and this light is just far too bright to see any other star.

There have been cases however of other "stars" that have been visible during the day. The supernovae of 1054 (which we now know formed the crab nebula 6,500 ly away) was recorded in China and also the Middle East. It was widely reported that it was visible during the day and so bright that you could even read by it at night.

You may be able to see some stars in the daytime during a solar eclipse.

The answer is Venus. They call Venus the Evening Star because it is very bright.

Only very rarely; when a supernova occurs in our galaxy it can be visible in daylight. The last such event was in 1604.

Why do stars come out?

The Earth's atmosphere contains nitrogen, which glows with blue light when struck by the suns rays. This obscures the stars during the daytime. If there were no nitrogen in the atmosphere, the stars would be visible all the time.

Why are constellations not seen during the daytime?

The bright light from the Sun overpowers the faint light from the stars but during a solar eclipse when the light from the Sun is block the stars and constellations become visible.

What is the evidence of stars?

Because they are highly luminous, stars may be observed directly in visible light frequencies. One example is the Sun, which is close to Earth and can be examined easily in the daytime, for example with a helioscope.

When the sun is out why is the moon an the stars stilll out?

Stars and Moon are always there; only that sometimes, in the daytime, they are outshone by the Sun. However, the Moon, and some of the brighter planets (especially Venus), are visible even at noon (if you know exactly where to look).

Why do meteorites appear only at night?

Simply, they dont. They are just more visible at night than during daylight hours. Just as the stars are still there in the daytime you cant see them because of the light level of the sun in the atmosphere is greater than that of the stars. We get the same number of meteors in the daytime as we do at night. Many smaller meteors just dont burn bright enough to be visible in the daytime sky. A meteor is in the sky, a meteorite is a meteor that has made it to the Earths surface. See the related link for more details.

Were do the stars go in the day time?

They are still there in the daytime. They are just difficult to see, because our atmosphere is too bright. Some bright planets (like Venus) or stars (like Sirius) should be visible if you know exactly where to look.

Why does the sky seem black on the moon?

Because the Moon has no atmosphere, there is no reaction of molecules to the Sun's rays, as there is on Earth during the daytime. If the Earth had no atmosphere, the stars would be visible all the time.
