In many cases nativism has come into play in various times in many nations throughout history. In the middle of the 19th century in the US, many people were resentful of Irish immigrants in major cites on the East Coast. These workers would work for less money then established Protestant whites. There was also a hatred for Roman Catholicism. White Protestant bigots who were radical Republicans noticed that these new people also seemed to vote Democratic. When Republicans were in power in Washington DC and in the US Midwest areas such as Illinois, the immigrants were seen as demons and along with slavery were dangers to the US Republic. Voting restrictions were used against them. And there were strong movements to prevent them from holding public office. These supremacy groups placed pressure on open immigration policies.

Nativists were highly opposed to immigrants to America. They believed they were changing the American cultural landscape negatively and ruining what it meant to be American.
