Dome light, glove box light etc. Find an ammeter and hook it up to the electrical system and then start pulling fuses one at a time to issolate the problem.
It needs a new part. Among the parts it could need are the battery, the alternator, the voltage regulator and any one of about thirty wires. The part it probably IS, is the battery. We know this because the engine won't start on its own battery but will run if started on someone else's battery. Oh yeah...VW alternators are kinda delicate. If you jump start a car with one in it, leave the car you're jumping from turned off. There are only about 5or 6 wires in the starting system but some are very long so the connections have to be good. The first thing to do is check the battery terminals for being clean and tight, water in the battery and charged , and chech all wires on the starter. You can get your battery checked at any automotive store for it's power.
Have it checked over by a gunsmith to be sure.
It will read 12.6 volts - thirty minutes after charging.

The simplest way to recharge a GOOD battery is to simply jump start and drive the vehicle for twenty to thirty minutes. The above answer is not a good idea if the battery was so weak it will not start the engine. You may damage the alternator by using it to charge a dead battery. You should charge the battery with a battery charger. That is the safest way.
They sell a replacement battery pack for around thirty dollars at most big name retailers such as best buy, toys r us, gamestop, walmart and many more.
