It always goes back to the basic 3. It doesn't really matter if the vehicle is new or old, has a carburator or computer controlled injection. To start, your engine must have fuel, compression and a properly timed ignition sourc. Find out which one isn't there and you'll know what's wrong. Try a little starting fluid sprayed directly into the carburator or throttle body. CAUTION! After spraying the starter fluid into the carb/throttle body, stand back before letting your assistant attempt to start the engine. We had the same problem. It turned out to be a broken timing chain. After we changed the chain it started right up.

The short answer is no.
I have a 2.0 1995 Mercury mystique the battery charge light was on no output on old alternator. Replaced alternator No output from new alternator "charge light out" (wiggle test wires& re-check wires) at alternator *still no output* is there a fuse that could be the problem or just another bad alternator... I would check the alternator plug before getting another alternator, it may be bad. And is a lot cheaper to replace.
the alternator will be on the end of the engine that has the drive belts or serpentine belts, alternators are belt driven.
Depending on which engine you have, an alternator could range from $140-195 (USD) at Autozone.com.
Its a sign that either your battery or alternator is starting to fail.
It should be the same as for a 2002 Mercury Cougar which is answered in WikiAnswer under the Question; " How to remove alternator from a 2002 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6." The 2000 Cougar may be different by having an upper alternator BOLT. If it does, and you can't lift the bolt out (after fully loosening the bolt), lower the alternator and you can, then, lift the bolt out. When you begin to install the alternator (attach the power wire, and the wire connector) place the BOLT in the upper hole in the alternator, and THEN, raise the alternator to install.
Yes, I have mass and so does Mercury.
I just looked at www.oreillyauto.com and found that for the 4 cylinder engine the alternator is $139.99 and for the V6 it is $169.99.
The charging system is the alternator which is on and functioning anytime the engine is running. If not, then you have a problem with the alternator.
most merc 50hp with efi and electric start have a 18amp alternator. This from mid 90's to now
