Most of the time it is caused by a hole in the heater core, do you smell a sweet smell? The sweet smell would be the antifreeze.

Either you have a blockage present or your vents on your sewer lines have become blocked or you need to install more vents.

The most likely cause would be a vacuum leak at the rear of the engine or a defective selector switch.

hi - we have a 2004 olds alero and have question about fuel milage . we get at best 16.3 mpg city ,is this normal ?

The Alero is made by Oldsmobile not Chrysler. My first suspicion would be a failed fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.

Is it a fish smell or a rotten egg smell ? FISH SMELL COULD BE A BAD HEATER CORE, THIS WOULD CAUSE YOU NOT TO HAVE HEAT IN THE CAR , BUT IT MIGHT NOT CAUSE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO COME ON UNLESS MAYBE CAR IS LOW ON COOLANT. ( THERE MIGHT BE A LOW COOLANT SENSOR TO TRIGGER CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) ROTTEN EGG SMELL COULD BE A CLOGGED CATALYTIC CONVERTER , WHICH WOULD CAUSE THE OXYGEN SENSOR TO TRIGGER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, BUT IT WOULDN'T CAUSE THE LOSS OF HEAT.

a bad sensor. the alero is notorius for many bad sensors. not an expensive replacement though

Brown suger in your diet can cause this smell.

There are heater doors on the heat blower box that direct the path of the heat. Apparently the heater door to the floor vents is stuck closed.

There are a number of reasons why air coming up from air vents would smell like dead fish. The air ducts may need cleaning. The air coil may need replacing. It could even be an electrical problem with the unit.

Changing ac components under the hood should not cause a chemical smell. If the smell changes by changing the air settings from recirculate to fresh, then there may be some chemicals on the outside of the parts. It is also possible that you damaged a part of the heater core system and the smell is antifreeze.

If the top is left off of the container it would smell up the whole house.

User Avatar

no, but it will reek More info: It's not the smell that can be harmful, but rats (especially decaying ones) do carry diseases. And being in the air vents can spread some air borne diseases throughout the house. It would be worth it to have the vent cleaned, just to be on the safe side. Besides, the smell will be there for quite a long time if it's not removed.

i believe the heater core is leaking, a small pin hole leak can generate a lot of smell.

User Avatar

This would depend on your nose. A bad CMP sensor may cause improper burning of the fuel and can give a smell out the tailpipe. Will the CMP smell? Never. A Ford camshaft syncronizer will squeek and could cause a metallic burning smell.

User Avatar

if your vehicle has air conditioning the smell could be caused by build up of bacteria on the heater matrix and in the vents, as this bacteria decays it causes a smell inside the cabin, this can be resolved by purchasing air specialist air con cleaner the is sprayed into the sir vents. the smell can also be caused by the heating of leaking coolant from the heater matrix, this would also combined with the car steaming up, check the coolant level to see if it has dropped. Ventilation filter: 1 - Behind glove compartment 2 - Behind lower instrument panel. 3 - It's clipped in. 4 - Remove lower filter, slide down upper filter, remove ventilation air filter. 6 - Replace and put clip back on.
