My son is 14 and has bad acne on his back. I just took him to the doctor for this. It was white blood cells gathering in the lymphnodes on the back of the neck (left and right side, but can just be one and there may be several smaller bumps next to the large one too if you feel around ). They are there to work on the infected pus of the acne. The white blood cells are the clean up crew of the immune system. Accocrding to the doctor, it is completely harmless, but the large nodes will be sore and you want to monitor them for growth. He prescribed a low dose antibiotic to help with the acne. It wasn't necessary, but I wanted it because it had been prescribed by a dermatologist in the past and it helps with ance.
don't worry just sleep on more comforteble surface and get some ear wash. it will be gone in no time..
It may be muscle knots if you have tmj/tmd disorder. I do, and they have been there for years. I am finally getting treated by a neuromuscular dentist. You should see one!
Stress, improper sleeping and poor posture. Working out, may cause less of them.
LYMPH NODES
Generally this is from a lack of sleep. However some drug abuse can cause this as well.
You need to go see a doctor. This could be an STD.

There are many causes of lumps in the neck. The most frequently seen lumps or swellings are enlarged nymph lodes. These can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, cancer ,or other rare causes. Enlargement of the salivary glands under the jaw may be caused by infection or cancer. Lumps in the muscles of the neck almost always in the front of the neck -- are caused by injury or tortolists. Lumps in the skin or just below the skin are often caused by cysts, including sebeacous cysts
I have looked around to see what I could find on what you describe and have landed a site that may be of interest to this particular problem as well a guidance to related sites. Go to (Lumps under the skin fibromyalgia) in the related links below for more information on this subject.

The following is copied from http://www.drugs.com/mtm/v/vicoprofen.html Haven't heard of "Painful lumps of the neck or head" when taking this medication, unless it might be the "muscle twitches" mentioned below under "possible side effects". What is the most important information I should know about hydrocodone and ibuprofen?
Take your dog to the vet. Lumps are never good on any part of the body.
