What would cause my weed trimmer to die when you pick it up but run great flat on the ground?

Inside the carburetor is a diaphragm, which serves at the fuel level control. In other machines, this is accomplished by the float and needle in the float bowl. But that setup requires a level running position. The diaphragm is probably cracked, and needs to be replaced. Get the rebuild kit from a lawnmower shop that carries that brand and go through the carb.
