There are many possible causes of numbness and tingling:

  • Sitting or standing in the same position for a long time
  • Injuring a nerve (a neck injury may cause you to feel numbness anywhere along your arm or hand, while a low back injury can cause numbness or tingling down the back of your leg)
  • Pressure on the nerves of the spine, such as from a herniated disk
  • Pressure on peripheral nerves from enlarged blood vessels, tumors, scar tissue, or infection
  • Shingles or herpes zoster infection
  • Lack of blood supply to an area, such as from atherosclerosis, frostbite, or vessel inflammation (vasculitis)
  • Abnormal levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium in your body
  • A lack of vitamin B12 or other vitamin
  • Use of certain medications
  • Nerve damage due to lead, alcohol, tobacco or chemotherapy drugs
  • Radiation therapy
  • Animal bites
  • Insect, tick, mite, and spider bites
  • Seafood toxins
  • Nerve entrapment from the muscle (Nerves pass through multiple locations in your muscle. When scar tissue builds up sometimes the nerves get "trapped" or compressed between the soft tissue. This can also cause a tingling/numbness sensation)

medical conditions, including:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (pressure on a nerve at the wrist)
  • Diabetes
  • Migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Seizures
  • Stroke
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a "mini-stroke"
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Raynaud's phenomenon (narrowing of the blood vessels, usually in the hands and feet)

AnswerA twitch is a sudden muscle spasm. It can be caused by a nervous condition, a problem with motor neurons or a host of other illnesses or diseases. If it persists, see your doctor. AnswerYour finger twitching could be a sign that your true love or crush is near you or possibly that you have Parkinson's disease.

The simplest thing is a spur or a misalignment of the cervical vertebrae. Sometimes an impingement of the radial nerve due to osteoarthritis in the wrist or elbow can cause this. A tightness of the fibrous band which binds the carpal bones becomes too tight due to overworking the wrist and a resultant swelling can cause this. It is called carpal tunnel sydrome.

********************************************************

If you are having some pain and numbness and tingling in the first three fingers and or thumb, especially at night, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome(CTS). This is caused by pressure on the median nerve as it passes through the wrist joint(the carpal tunnel canal).

Risk factors for getting CTS include repetitive hand use, diabetes, hypothyroidism, obesity, pregnancy just to name a few.

The median nerve does originate from the neck and passes through the shoulder area and elbow area as well, and sometimes other conditions in these areas mimic CTS, you may have to end up getting xrays, MRI of the neck and nerve conduction tests of the arms before you get a clear diagnosis.
