What would cause the speedometer fuelgauge tach to go out all of a sudden on 2000 Nissan sentra?

It could be a couple things, but the most common would be a fuse or a relay. Check your owners manual and see if there is 1 fuse or relay that controls all of the aforementioned gages, and if there is, pull the fuse/relay out. With relays, you can check to see if they are bad 1 of two ways. One would be with an ohm meter, and the other would be to take a peice of insulated wire with both ends exposed, and stick it in where the posotive ends of the relay were in the fuse box. If you're gages work, you just need to replace the relay. If it is a fuse that runs it, pull the fuse and you can physically see if the connection is broken in the middle of the fuse. If it is, make sure it is the right amperage, and replace it. If your relays and fuses are all good, you'll have to have an ohm meter and just go from the fuse box back to the in question gages, testing all splices/wire nuts to make sure there is not a faulty connection.

Possibly a bad vehicle speed sensor (VSS). This sensor is usually located in the side of the transmission.

See if they work at the driver door. (Or at the rear doors) If they work at one and not the others, it is probably a dirty switch. If they don't work at either place it is probably a fuse, or some cars have a child safety switch to keep the rear windows from rolling down.

- I have a 2002 Caravan with the similar symptoms - speedometer stopped working but tripometer and odometer still work. The speedometer needle is wrapped all the way around past the top speed and resting on the bottom of the needle resting peg. I saw a posting about reseting the dashboard by removing the IOD fuse and replacing it but that did not help. I also tried pressing the trip button in and turning the ignition on as described in another post with no luck. Has anyone solved this or do I have a faulty speedometer requiring replacement? thanks Steve
