there is probably a sensor on the transmission that is either gone bad or become loose.
got the same exact problem.
TCM Malfunction, And/Or Speedometer Sensor Malfunction.
The gears in the speedometer are stripped. If the odometer is working then you have input.
you can go to speedometer and out of speedometer
If the speedometer is not working but the odometer is, I would suspect the dash cluster is at fault. If both speedometer and odometer are not working I would suspect the speed sensor on the transmission is at fault.
If the speedometer and the odometer are not working, I would suspect the VSS (vehicle speed sensor). If only the speedometer is not working I would suspect the instrument cluster has problems.
May be you accidently disconnected a sensor wire doing the repairs. Maybe you have to reprogram the vehicle computer because the battery was disconnected. LOL
why would a speedometer stop working on a Mazda
If the speedometer continues to work - probably a broken gear etc. in speedometer head and probably will have to be replaced. If speedometer does not work -- probably a broken speedometer cable
Bad wheel speed sensor or cluster needs replaced
Probably a blown fuse. Check your manual to see if they share the same one.
The odometer on a 96 Ford Explorer is tied into the speedometer. If the speedometer is working then there is a gear problem inside of the speedometer causing the odometer to not work.
