What would cause water to leak from the cold water feeder tank in the loft through the outside overflow other than ball-valve problems as it does not happen all the while?

I recently had water overflowing from my central heating header tank. I replaced the ballvalve, which had no effect. I isolated the water supply, and it still overflowed (about 1 gallon per week). In this situation, the only way for water to get into the central heating system was via the coil in the copper storage cylinder. If your central heating header is higher than your cold water storage, then it would happen the other way round. I hope this is not your problem, or you are competent at diy, as the plumbers will charge
