What would cause water to leak from the cold water feeder tank in the loft through the outside overflow other than ball-valve problems as it does not happen all the while?

I recently had water overflowing from my central heating header tank. I replaced the ballvalve, which had no effect. I isolated the water supply, and it still overflowed (about 1 gallon per week). In this situation, the only way for water to get into the central heating system was via the coil in the copper storage cylinder. If your central heating header is higher than your cold water storage, then it would happen the other way round. I hope this is not your problem, or you are competent at diy, as the plumbers will charge

A tub drain vents through the overflow.

The overflow is a round chrome ring concealing a pipe near the top of the tub. This joins directly to the tub drain so it can not overfill.

Well, no. But its normal for the float in the carb to get get stuck and cause the gas to overflow through the overflow tube.

The pressure from the radiator is pushing out through the overflow canister. Probably solved with new radiator cap but could be an indication of head gasket problems if pressure gets too high.

If the brake fluid reservoir is overfilled, the excess fluid runs through the overflow instead of over the bodywork, which would cause damage to the paint work.

The overflow tube is clogged is my first guess, unless someone or something has cracked the drain tube with activity in the area.

Through the overflow tank. Open the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing, turn heat to high, and pour coolant in the overflow tank until it comes out the bleeder valve.

You fill the radiator through the overflow tank.

If you are getting exhaust smoke coming out of the radiator overflow, you need to replace the head gasket that seals the cylinder from the cylinder cap where your coolant runs through to cool the engine.

through the reserve tank which is also called the overflow tank being that there is no radiator cap!

Usually. Going through the overflow drain gets you straight into the drain without having to make the sharp bend in the tub drain. There could be a trap that comes apart in the drain underneath if it is accessible.

User Avatar

It has a tube between itself and the radiator. As coolant heats up, it expands. The expanding coolant goes through the tube into the overflow tank. Later, when the vehicle is shut off and the radiator cools, the overflow is pulled back into the radiator. The system is "closed", hence the coolant does not just "dribble away" when it expands like it did in vehicles many years ago.

Lots of things can cause it. Heavy rain can be one cause. Rivers can also get blocked up making it more difficult for water to get through. They need to be dredged every so often to prevent that. Sometimes work can cause rivers to be diverted or blocked, which can cause them to overflow.

The radius is the distance from the center to the outside. The diameter is the distance from the outside to the outside, passing through the center - in other words, twice the radius.
