If the chromosome number was not reduced during meiosis, what would happen during fertilization is that the fetus would then have either an extra chromosome or have an extra chromosome. The resulting baby would then have some form of developmental problem.

there wouldn't be life. There wouldn't be a cell in the first place without chromosomes so its not an issue.

I believe that the cell would function without chromosomes in some rudimentary processes. These processes would probably have various time limits beyond which they could not continue without reference to the chromosomes. I believe the cell would function using various subparts such as mitochondria; some of these subparts or organelles would have some time functions to coordinate amongst themselves. The cell could not reproduce itself without the chromosomes, but perhaps it could function for some time if the chromosomes do not actively control all the most vital life processes within the cell and at the cell wall. I am not referring to any sources but basing my ideas on what I believe to be true. So this may not be correct. It is an interesting question though.

Then your cells would have twice the number of chromosomes, which would be bad. I think.

Why can't we inherit both copies of a homologous chromosome from the same parent?

If we inherited both copies of a homologous chromosome, that would mean that we would only have one parent. Since mammals reproduce by sexual reproduction, it is impossible for this to happen.
