When you run a current through water, molecules of water split in an electrolysis reaction.

Electrolysis of water produces hydrogen and oxygengases at different electrodes.

2H2O(l) --> 2H2(g) + O2(g)

Hydrogen is collected at the cathode.

Oxygen is collected at the anode.

An electric current can not pass through distilled water. It can only pass through water that has ions in it. It can pass through most bodies of water and through tap water. Lightning can electrocute people swimming in pools and lakes simply by hitting the water they are in. It spreads out.

From what I know, it seems like the water would heat up and if there was a person in it, they would get electrocuted. Electricity travels very fast in water. But this may not be true.

Set up properly, you will create electrolysis. Oxygen and hydrogen will disassociate form each other and be turned into gases.

Voltage is a measure of electric force. Water is a molecule. You can't mix a unit of measure and a compound.

Why does electricity give you a shock if it touches water?

"Pure Water" is non-conductive, it is the minerals and salts in the water that allow it to conduct electricity; and that is why you get shocked. Because water in its normal state will conduct electricity (in most cases better than electrical wires).
