The bridge would probably begin to crumble due to the heat expanding and stretching the bridge so much. The metals and the cement would stretch and crack causing it to crumble under any weight.

It can bend, twist, break or even collapse. This is very dangerous.

Explain the purpose of an expansion joint on a bridge?

The purpose of an expansion joint on a bridge it to permit the components to expand and contract with changing temperatures without stressing the entire bridge structure. Early bridge failure would be the result of building a modern bridge without expansion joints.

Why do engieneers add expansion joints to a bridge in order to make them safer?

The joints are essential to maintain the structural integrity of the bridges components throughout temperature ranges. Heat expands the structures and cold contracts. Without expansion joints the bridges overall life would be greatly reduced and cracks and tears could rapidly develop, making the bridge less safe.

Why are there expansion gaps in bridges?

Hot weather causes the metal the bridges are made of to heat up and expand. If there was no space for them to expand then the bridge would either crack it's foundations or tear itself to pieces.

How would changes in temperature would affect a bridge?

Thermal expansion means that the length of the bridge changes.

If large metal bridges were built without expansion gaps what could happen to the bridge over the day?

The bridge would probably begin to crumble due to the heat expanding and stretching the bridge so much. The metals and the cement would stretch and crack causing it to crumble under any weight.

What would happen if there were no gaps in a bridge?

Expansion and contraction with heat and cold causes the road to swell and shrink. the gaps are for that purpose so the road or bridge would buckle and break if they were not there! Before this was discovered things broke often

Why is thermal expansion not visible in solids?

Thermal expansion in solids is normally very small - typically around one part in one hundred thousand for a one Kelvin temperature change. That means that a one metre long length of aluminium, for example, will only change size by 0.23mm when heated by 10kelvin - effectively invisible to the human eye. Thermal expansion, though can be visible to the unaided eye if the object is large enough - a kilometer long bridge, for example, may vary in length by as much as a metre or more between summer and winter, depending upon the seasonal temperature change, and will have expansion joints that allow sections of the bridge to expand into one another without changing the overall length of the bridge, and risking damage to the structure. If you were to look at these joints in winter and then in summer, you would see the difference that thermal expansion makes.

What is meant by expansion joint and Where expansion joints are used in refinerieswhythis type joint used now?

Expansion joints are used on long runs (over 100 feet) of pipe or ducts where the expansion of steel will create stress on the pipe or its supports. for every 1 degree change in metal temperature the pipe will expand 6 millionths of a foot per foot of length. on a steam pipe 400 foot long carrying 750 degree steam this expansion would amount to a change in length of the pipe of 1.632 feet. this could tear down the supporting structure if this expansion weren't relieved by an expansion joint every 100 feet. expansion joints could be flexible corrugated pipe, reinforced rubber sheet, sliding pipe joints, or expansion loops, among other things.

What is application of expansion joint?

Expansion joints include: PTFE expansion joint, Rubber expansion joint, Metallic expansion joint, and Fabric expansion joint. visit website: www.rubbersealing.comPTFE expansion jointThe PTFE expansion joints are unreinforced PTFE that come standard with iron 150# drill flanges. Stainless flanges are available. They are avaialable in 2, 3, or 5convolutions of varing movements. The 2-convolution joint is sometimes referred to as a "coupling".Molded flexible couplings and expansion joints of PTFEdesigned to help protect pumps, compressors and other expensive equipment.Bellows-type flexible couplings and expansion joints are contour molded of black PTFE by a patented process. They are corrosion resistant, non-aging, with extraordinary flex life and unmatched reliability. These superior units cost no more than those made of lesser materials. The flexible element is formed over the full sealing face of the end flanges eliminating troublesome separate gaskets.Note the change in pressure rating with
