Actually, it is more conceivable that the French would have carried through with their claims to Australian territory, and most people would now be speaking French here.

Had the First Fleet not come to Australia, it is quite conceivable that the French would have carried through with their claims to Australian territory, and most people would now be speaking French in Australia.

Did they eat chicken on the first fleet?

Chickens came with the First Fleet to Australia. Some of these may have been prepared by the cook for the officers of the Fleet, but it is unlikely that many would have been eaten, as they would have been needed for breeding stock upon arrival in the new colony. Convicts would not have eaten chicken.

Where did the First Fleet arrive and why?

The First Fleet was supposed to land at Botany Bay in New South Wales, because this was the location recommended by James Cook and botanist Sir Joseph Banks when they first sailed up the eastern coast of Australia in 1770. The First Fleet moved from Botany Bay, as Governor Arthur Phillip noted straight away that the conditions there were not suitable for settlement. There was insufficient fresh water; the harbour was not deep enough or sheltered enough for future growth; the soil was unsuitable for farming; there was insufficient timber that would be suitable for building. The fleet then moved north to Port Jackson, which is where the city of Sydney now stands.

What would have happened to you if you had been transported on the First Fleet to Australia?

Any number of things could have happened to an individual transported on the First Fleet. The least likely was that one would die. The death rate on the First Fleet was quite low, but conditions below were not hygienic, and there were some deaths from dysentery. The great majority of convicts reached Australia safely. These people were put to work in the new colony: some on manual labour such as building roads or tilling the ground, and some assigned as servants to the officers. Some of the women even married the marines. While the heat and humidity was intolerable for the people, not being used to the weather, their prospects were more positive in New South Wales an in England. Austalia's first farmer was convict James Ruse, who was on the First Fleet, and he was very successful.
