Mass
A potato, shopping carts, copper tubing, drain cleaner, a sousaphone or skittles. This is but a small list of the many items that are unable to identify minerals.
StreakColor of the mineral when it is powdered.Grind a small amount of a mineral into a powder on a porcelain streak plate and determine the color of the powder.
Crystal habitColourStreakHardnessCleavageLusterare some of the principal physical properties used to identify minerals.
Color, streak color, hardness, cleavage, and chemical.
Testing the chemical properties of a mineral might damage the mineral sample. Also, these tests can be complex and may require expensive equipment.
Streaks of MineralsStreaks ( layers of different colorings ) can be used to identify which country a mineral originate. Streaks are an optical property (viewing effects--color, luster, luminescence, iridescence). For example Agate quartz from German mines can streak red, pink, brown, separated by gray bands. The Agate from South American are usually dull gray. The inherent color (basic color, the true color) is colorless. Color in a mineral comes from other elements. Streak are use to enhance a mineral's importance in increase price as Chrysoberyl which has light source that move across the surface. See color by streaking a mineral on a 'streak plate, (rough porcelain plate).
Mass
The color, luster, and crystal shape of a mineral may be observed just by looking at the mineral. Some minerals have very distinctive colors that help identify them. Although the color of a mineral can give away its identity, color is the least useful property for mineral identification.
HARDNESS
It is the streak property. The streak is the color of a mineral in powdered form.
The Mohs scale is used to identify the mineral property of hardness only.
There really isn't one single property, there are multiple properties that need to be used to diagnose a mineral.
The least effective property used to identify most minerals would be the color. The color of a mineral can be altered by impurities.

Geolgy
A streak test is used to determine a minerals streak color. This can help in the identification of minerals.
You identify minerals through a streak test. This involves taking the tile and the mineral to be identified and rubbing them together. This produces a colored streak on the tile, which can be used to identify the mineral. Consult a field guide for specific colors.
