What would people in the Old West cowboys say in place of swear words?

Cowboys were extremely polite, in spite of the fact that most of them were rough men with no education. They said "durn" or "darn" - or "Gosh durn it" or "Gosh darn it." They wouldn't even use the term "bull" for a male cow - they called it a "cow critter!"
