What would the engine light warning mean on a 1997 Chevy S-10?
A lot of things...specifically that something is wrong..take it into autozone and they'll plug into it and see what the trouble code is and tell you what's wrong.

The light could come on for a number of reasons. The vehivle would have to be hooked up to a scanner to determine the engine code or codes. After you determine the codes you can isolate and fix the probelem. If the check engine light is on there will be a computer code that will appear on the scanner.

Without proper water circulation through the engine block the engine will rapidly overheat. The first warning will be the water temp gauge or idiot light, and you will start smelling a strange odor coming from the engine compartment. The warning light doesn't tell you how healthy the battery is, it tells you if there are any problems with the charging system.
